    Sceletium Phytochemistry

Sceletium tortuosum, commonly known as kanna, channa, or kougoed, is a succulent plant from the Aizoaceae family and Mesembryanthemum genus, native to South Africa's Cape Provinces. Its physical characteristics include thick, fleshy leaves with bladder cells and a distinct skeletonized leaf venation pattern identified in 1925. The plant's flowers range from white to yellow, and it produces kidney-shaped seeds in capsules. As a creeper, it grows up to 15-20 cm high and typically in pairs during winter, with leaves dying off in summer for environmental protection. Research has identified twenty-five alkaloids in kanna, classified into mesembrine, Sceletium A4, joubertiamine, and tortuosamine classes, with mesembrine being the most prevalent. These alkaloids are linked to its traditional uses, which include quenching thirst, providing mild analgesia, and mood alteration.
