Amanita Pantherina Caps High Muscimol

Amanita pantherina caps are the whole dried caps of the panther cap, the brown-capped cousin of the fly agaric, grown in Ukraine and processed to preserve the natural compounds. Same genus, same compound family, different species and a noticeably different mushroom: a tan to deep brown dome with white warts in place of the red most people know. Pantherina is generally reported as stronger per gram than Amanita muscaria, which is why it is sold and handled on its own page rather than as a substitute. Every lot is HPLC tested for muscimol and ibotenic acid.

The species. Amanita pantherina, the panther cap, is the close relative of the fly agaric and the same genus and section. It grows with broadleaf and conifer hosts across Europe and Asia and it is the brown-capped member of the pair: a tan to deep brown dome with white warts and a distinct ring, where Amanita muscaria carries the familiar red. Both appear across the ethnomycological literature, and the genus as a whole remains a live subject of academic interest.

Traditional use. The panther cap shows up in the same northern European and Siberian folk record as the fly agaric, usually as the stronger of the two and treated with more caution for it. Caps were dried before any use in those traditions, and the drying is what shifts ibotenic acid toward muscimol. Fresh caps should never be eaten.

How it differs from muscaria. Pantherina is generally described in the literature as carrying a higher proportion of the active isoxazoles by weight than muscaria. Visually the two are easy to tell apart once you have both in front of you. Anyone used to muscaria caps should treat pantherina as a different material and start well below what they are used to.

How we test. Each lot of caps goes to HPLC before listing, and the test reports muscimol and ibotenic acid. Pantherina lots vary more than muscaria lots in our experience, which is exactly why we test rather than rely on a species average. The grower is not named on the site. Ask customer service if you need a batch result.

Legality. Amanita pantherina is not federally scheduled in the United States. Louisiana restricts amanita species and we do not ship there. A few other states have their own rules, so check yours before ordering. Adults 21 and over only.

Storage. Dried caps are brittle. Keep them in a rigid sealed container, dark and dry, with a desiccant packet if your room runs humid. Light dulls the colour over months and moisture is what turns whole caps into fragments.
