The plant. Amanita muscaria, the fly agaric, is the red-and-white mushroom of northern birch and pine forests, with the brown-capped A. pantherina and the liver-brown A. regalis as close relatives. Siberian and northern European folk traditions, including the Koryak and Sámi, dried the caps before use. The two key compounds are ibotenic acid and muscimol; careful drying and decarboxylation, whether by heat or by acidic simmering, converts ibotenic acid into muscimol, and that conversion is the whole art of preparing amanita. Fresh caps are not a product and should never be eaten.

Dosing overview.
