Mucuna Pruriens Extract

Mucuna Pruriens Extract is a concentrated velvet bean seed powder, prepared to preserve the plant's naturally occurring L-Dopa and its other native compounds rather than stripping them out in processing. It is a single-ingredient extract with no fillers that can be capsuled, taken as a powder or made into a tincture. Offered in 1oz, 2oz and 4oz sizes.

The herb. Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) is a climbing legume of the pea family, Fabaceae, native to tropical Africa and Asia and grown widely across India and the Caribbean. Ayurvedic texts know it as kapikacchu, a tonic food for centuries. The pods carry itching hairs, but the seeds are what herbalists use: they are unusual among plants for holding a substantial natural store of L-Dopa, the amino acid derivative the body uses to build dopamine, alongside proteins, tannins and trace alkaloids.

Active content. This extract keeps the seed's naturally occurring L-Dopa intact, and we do not attach a standardized percentage to it. L-Dopa is what gives mucuna its lifted, motivated character; the remaining tannins and minor alkaloids give the whole extract a rounder, more grounded feel than an isolated compound would.

Dosage, first time. The listing does not state a serving size, so start with a small weighed amount taken with a little food, and wait. Mucuna typically comes on within the first hour and holds for a few hours. Do not add more until you have felt the full effect.

Regular use. Once you know your response, keep to the amount that worked rather than increasing. Many people use mucuna on some days rather than every day, and earlier rather than late.

What to expect. Users describe mucuna as bright, uplifted and quietly motivated, with a warm, easygoing body feel rather than an edgy stimulant push. It suits a slow morning or a workout, and it is not a sedating evening format. For a grounding, evening-leaning root, compare our Organic Ashwaganda Powder.

Side effects. Mucuna's side effects are those documented for L-Dopa and rise with the amount: nausea, headache, digestive upset, restlessness, vivid dreams and a jittery feeling. Reduce the amount or stop, and they settle as the extract clears.

Interactions and cautions. Do not combine mucuna with levodopa or other dopaminergic medications, MAOIs, antidepressant medications, antipsychotic medications, methyldopa or medications for your heart or circulation. Do not use with alcohol or stimulants. Not for use if pregnant or nursing, or with a heart, liver or psychiatric condition. For adults 21+ only. Keep out of reach of children.

Ingredients and storage. Pure Mucuna Pruriens Extract (Mucuna pruriens). Store sealed in a cool, dry place away from light; L-Dopa degrades with heat and humidity.

• Does mucuna extract need to be capsuled? No, it can be capsuled, mixed as a powder or made into a tincture, though capsules hide the earthy taste.
