Damiana Leaf (Turnera Diffusa)

Native to Texas, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, Damiana has a long history of use dating back to the ancient Maya, who consumed it as an aphrodisiac and bladder tonic. In the 19th century, it gained widespread popularity in the United States as a component of traditional patent medicines and elixirs designed to restore nervous energy and sexual vitality.

Primary actions include serving as an aphrodisiac, thymoleptic (mood elevator), mild anxiolytic, and digestive stimulant. It acts as a gentle central nervous system tonic that relaxes physical tension while gently stimulating mental awareness.

Contains volatile oils rich in alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, and thymol. It also features cyanogenic glycosides, tannins, resin, and the bitter principle damianin, which collectively contribute to its aromatic flavor and stimulant qualities.

The leaves are the primary part used, harvested during the flowering season when the plant’s volatile oil content is at its peak.

Generally safe for regular consumption in moderate amounts. Due to its traditional use as a uterine stimulant, it should be avoided during pregnancy. It may also affect blood glucose levels, so individuals taking diabetes medications should monitor their blood sugar closely.

Historically used to alleviate depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction in both men and women. It is frequently prepared as an aromatic tea, infused into traditional Mexican liqueurs, or included in herbal smoking blends to encourage relaxation and relieve stress.
