Amanita Regalis (A-Grade) is whole dried Amanita regalis caps, the brown-capped cousin of fly agaric, harvested in Ukraine by sustainable growers and hand-selected for appearance and preservation. A-Grade means the best of a harvest: caps that dried flat and intact, veil spots still visible, no crumbling or dark patches. The herb. Amanita regalis, the royal fly agaric or king of Sweden mushroom, belongs to the same section of the Amanita genus as the red A. muscaria but wears a liver-brown to golden-bronze cap instead of a red one. It grows with spruce in the boreal forests of Scandinavia, the Baltics, Ukraine and Russia, and it turns up in the folklore, mythology and ethnomycological literature of Northern Europe and Asia, where its scarcity gave it a certain prestige. It carries the same isoxazole pair as its red relative, ibotenic acid and muscimol, and it remains a species of ongoing interest because its chemical composition is distinct from other Amanita species.

What's in it. Whole dried caps carry the mushroom's natural constituents unchanged:

Ibotenic acid: the compound that dominates fresh and gently dried material
Muscimol: forms from ibotenic acid as caps dry and age or when they are deliberately heated
Muscarine and other minor compounds: present in small amounts

We do not standardize whole caps to a percentage, and the ratio in any given cap depends on how it was dried, how old it is and where it grew, which is why regalis remains a subject of study rather than a settled quantity.

Dosage, first time. These caps are sold as botanical specimens and we give no serving for them. In December 2024 the FDA issued guidelines stating that Amanita muscaria, its extracts and the constituents muscimol, ibotenic acid and muscarine are not authorized for use as ingredients in conventional food, and while regalis is a distinct species it contains similar compounds. In every tradition that handled these mushrooms, the constant was caution: caps were always dried thoroughly, never used fresh, and the starting amount was tiny, with a wait of several hours before any judgment was made.

Regular use. With no stated range, the useful discipline is documentation. Weigh caps rather than counting them, since a large regalis cap can weigh several times a small one, and note the drying condition and color of each lot. Collectors rotate stock so the oldest caps are examined first, because slow conversion continues in storage.

What to expect. A-Grade regalis is the choice for display, herbarium work and anyone who wants the most photogenic, intact caps of this rarer species. The brown cap with pale warts is striking beside a red muscaria. In the folk literature, users describe muscimol-dominant preparations as heavy, dreamy and inward rather than bright or social. Side effects. Every account of these mushrooms, from Siberian ethnography to modern case reports, describes the same dose-driven cluster: nausea, sweating, excess saliva, drowsiness and vivid, unusual dreams. Fresh or unprepared caps are far worse in every respect and are never to be used. Any unpleasant reaction is a reason to stop and to involve less material, not more.
