Amanita Regalis (B-Grade)

Amanita Regalis (B-Grade) is the same dried Amanita regalis caps as our A-Grade, harvested in Ukraine by sustainable growers and dried and preserved to keep their natural integrity, but drawn from the part of the harvest that did not make the top cut. B-Grade caps may be broken, curled, smaller or less evenly colored, with more pieces and fewer perfect whole caps, which makes them the cost-effective option for research, academic study and ornamental use when appearance is secondary. The species and the drying are identical; only the sorting differs. Not for human consumption, and not available in Louisiana.

The herb. Also known as fly agaric, though in its royal form, Amanita regalis is the brown to bronze-capped species that grows with spruce across the boreal forests of Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Ukraine and Russia. It is well represented in the folklore, mythology and ethnomycological literature of Northern Europe and Asia, and it continues to interest researchers because its chemical composition is distinct from other Amanita species. Like the red muscaria and the panther cap, it carries ibotenic acid and muscimol, with muscimol forming from ibotenic acid as the mushroom dries, ages or is heated, and the balance between the two depends on handling as much as on the species itself.

What's in it. Dried caps and cap pieces of A. regalis and nothing else. The natural constituents are:

• Ibotenic acid
• Muscimol
• Muscarine and the minor compounds of this section of the genus, present in small amounts

Broken caps and fragments are chemically the same as whole ones from the same lot, though pieces expose more surface area and can dry further in storage, which slowly shifts the ratio toward muscimol. No percentage is measured or claimed for whole mushroom material.

Dosage, first time. These caps are sold as specimens and no serving is given. The FDA stated in December 2024 that Amanita muscaria, its extracts and the constituents muscimol, ibotenic acid and muscarine are not authorized as ingredients in conventional food, and regalis, while a distinct species, contains similar compounds. Traditional handlers of these mushrooms were unanimous on method: dry the caps completely, never use them fresh, start with a tiny amount and wait many hours before deciding anything.

Regular use. There is no stated range. Because B-Grade lots mix large pieces, small pieces and crumbs, weight is the only meaningful measure, and a jar should be gently mixed before any portion is taken so it represents the whole lot rather than the dust at the bottom.

What to expect. B-Grade regalis suits researchers working through quantity, students learning to identify the species by cap color and veil remnants, and anyone making decorative or artistic use of dried caps who does not need every piece perfect. The brown cap of regalis is unmistakable next to a red muscaria and makes a good teaching pair. In the ethnographic record, users describe muscimol-dominant preparations as heavy, dreamy and inward, never bright or social. Side effects. The unwanted effects of regalis are the same as the rest of its group and rise steeply with amount: nausea, sweating, drooling, drowsiness and vivid, unsettled dreams. Pieces and crumbs are easy to under-count, which is another reason to weigh. Fresh or unprepared caps are never acceptable in any tradition, and any unpleasant reaction is the signal to use far less or stop.
