Wild Dagga (Leonotis Leonurus)

Native to Southern Africa, Wild Dagga has been used for centuries by the Khoikhoi and San peoples. It is traditionally known as "Lion's Ear" due to the shape of its striking orange flower clusters. It holds a significant place in African traditional medicine as a versatile remedy and was often smoked or brewed into teas for its mild calming effects.
Key actions include sedative, antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is widely recognized for its ability to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension, and support respiratory health.
The primary active constituent is leonurine, a mild alkaloid. It also contains various diterpenes (such as leonotinin), flavonoids, and tannins that contribute to its antioxidant and analgesic effects.
The leaves and the vibrant orange flowers (corollas) are the parts used. The flowers are generally considered more potent than the leaves.
Generally considered safe in moderation, but excessive use may cause mild dizziness or nausea. Due to its sedative nature, it should not be combined with pharmaceutical sedatives or alcohol. Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Historically used to treat snakebites, stings, and skin rashes when applied topically. Internally, it has been used to manage hypertension, support heart health, and relieve symptoms of the common cold, coughs, and bronchitis.
