Kanna Extracts: Powder and Resin

This is the concentrated end of our kanna range, 20 listings of standardized Sceletium tortuosum extract powders and resin. Powders are where potency and precision live: each one is standardized to a stated total alkaloid percentage or a stated alkaloid ratio, made in small batches and lab tested so the number on the label is real. Percentages run from a gentle 1.5% all the way to 24%, with named profiles in between built around either mesembrine or mesembrenone. Kanna for these extracts is sourced through South African San Council benefit-sharing partnerships. Whole leaf and seeds are under kanna loose leaf, and ready-made liquids under kanna tinctures and infusions.

The plant. Sceletium tortuosum is a succulent of the Aizoaceae family native to the dry Karoo of South Africa, chewed and fermented by the San and Khoikhoi for generations. An extract concentrates the plant's alkaloids: mesembrine gives the brighter, uplifting side, mesembrenone and delta-7-mesembrenone the calmer, body-focused side, with mesembranol rounding it out. Extraction lets us control that balance far more tightly than raw leaf, which is why our powders carry names like RAVE, MELLOW and AMBITION rather than just a percentage.

How to choose.

• Beginners do best in the 4 to 6% range where a serving is easy to weigh. BLOOM MT5 5% total alkaloid is the balanced all-rounder, MZQ 5.5% high mesembrine leans bright and social, and MELLOW FS3 4.5% leans calm.
• For a mesembrenone-forward profile pick AMBITION XK6 high delta-7 mesembrenone.
• Experienced users who want a tiny weighed serving can step up to the 15% active alkaloid powder or IGNITE 17% almost pure mesembrine.
• If you prefer something closer to whole plant character, Kanna Extract Resin is a thick full-spectrum concentrate, and if you cannot decide, the sampler of four quarter grams lets you compare profiles side by side.

Dosing overview. Follow the serving on each product page and weigh it on a milligram scale; a kitchen scale is not precise enough for extracts. Powders can be capsuled, stirred into a drink or held under the tongue, and resin is typically taken in a rice-grain sized amount as the product page describes. Start at the low end and wait two hours. The higher the percentage, the smaller the serving, so never carry a serving size from a 5% product over to a 15% or 20% product.

What to expect. Powders come on within an hour, faster when held sublingually, and taper over a few hours. High mesembrine profiles are described as lifted and clear-headed, high mesembrenone profiles as melty and easygoing. Resin feels rounder and slower than a powder of similar strength. None of these are meant to be redosed all day; one considered serving is the norm.

Grown on Our Own Farm in South Africa

Most kanna sold online is bought from a broker, so the seller has no say in how it was grown or extracted. We took a different route. Healing Herbals leases nursery land in South Africa, kanna's home range, where we grow roughly 200,000 plants with a crew of 7 to 8 people on the ground who handle propagation, planting, harvest and curing.

In spring 2026 we opened an on-site extraction lab, so the extracts on this page are now made in house from our own plants rather than purchased as finished powder. That gives us control over which cultivars go in, how the material is fermented, and how each batch is standardized to its stated alkaloid number before it is lab tested and shipped from New York.

Kanna is a protected species in South Africa, and we hold the protected-species and export licensing needed to grow it and move it legally. Our supply also runs through South African San Council benefit-sharing partnerships, which keeps the traditional custodians of the plant part of the picture.

Side effects and cautions. Because these are concentrates, overshooting is the main risk. Too much brings mild nausea, headache, jitteriness or a reduced appetite that fades as kanna clears; reduce the serving next time.

Common questions

• How much kanna extract powder should a first-timer weigh out? Use the low end of the serving printed on that product's page, weighed on a milligram scale, and wait two hours before judging.
• Is a 15% kanna extract three times as strong as a 5% one? Roughly, yes, so the serving should be about a third the size, which is why beginners are steered to the 4 to 6% products.
• Does kanna resin need a scale? Resin is dosed by a small measured amount as described on its page, and a scale still helps you stay consistent.
