What Is the Difference Between 5% and 20% Kanna Extract?
Short answer: the percentage is total alkaloids by weight, so a 20% extract is four times as concentrated as a 5% extract, gram for gram. It is not four times better. You just use a quarter as much.
Raw kanna leaf runs roughly 0.3% to 2.3% total alkaloids depending on the plant and how it was grown. Extraction pulls those alkaloids out of the fiber and concentrates them. At 5%, a product like MT5 Bloom is forgiving: a 50 mg pinch is about 2.5 mg of alkaloids, easy to eyeball and hard to overshoot. At 20%, the 20% extract puts 10 mg of alkaloids in that same pinch, which is why it ships with a micro scoop and a firmer suggestion to weigh it.
Price per milligram of alkaloid usually favors the higher percentage. Convenience and margin for error favor the lower one. New users tend to start at 2.5% to 5%. Experienced users who make their own sprays, capsules or gummies lean on 15% to 24%.
The full spread is in the kanna extract collection, each lot with its own COA.
