The herb. Kava (Piper methysticum) is a member of the pepper family, cultivated across the Pacific Islands, above all in Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga. Islanders have prepared the root as a ceremonial and social drink for over three thousand years, kneading it in water and sharing it from a communal bowl at day's end. The root carries six major kavalactones, and the balance between them, the chemotype, is what separates a light, heady kava from a heavy, body-focused one. Noble varieties, the cultivars islanders drink daily, are prized for a smooth, predictable character.

Active content. Each serving contains 682mg of kava extract providing 205mg of kavalactones, which puts a single pour in the range of a solid traditional shell. The six kavalactones each pull in a slightly different direction:

• Kavain: quick, heady and uplifting, the part that arrives first
• Dihydrokavain: follows with a mellow, relaxed quality
• Methysticin and dihydromethysticin: the heavier, body-focused kavalactones that settle into the muscles
• Yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin: sit in the background and round out the profile

The spirit-style base and the lemon, lavender and lychee soften the muddy character of raw root, so Kavaly drinks smoothly without losing the kavalactones that make it work.

Dosage, first time. Pour a single serving, which delivers 682mg of kava extract and 205mg of kavalactones, neat, over ice or in a mocktail. Sip it slowly rather than shooting it, and expect a mild tingling or numbness on the lips and tongue; that is normal for kava. Onset is usually within twenty to thirty minutes and builds for about an hour. Wait at least an hour before a second serving so you judge the full effect. Kava is best on an empty or light stomach; a heavy meal beforehand blunts it and can bring nausea.

Regular use. Once you know your response, most people settle into one or two servings over an evening, spaced well apart. Kava has a reverse tolerance: the first few sessions can feel mild and become more noticeable with familiarity, so do not chase it early by pouring more. Keep servings measured, save it for occasions rather than a nightly habit, and never exceed the serving that sits well with you.

What to expect. Users describe Kavaly as a relaxed, social warmth that arrives quickly, takes the edge off the day and makes a room feel easier, with a calm, present head rather than fog. It suits a dinner party, a sober-curious night out, a Friday wind-down or a holiday table. Mix it with tonic, soda or ginger beer, or pour it neat over ice. It is not a shot of energy and not a heavy, knock-you-flat kava; for traditional root you knead and strain yourself, see our Kava Medium grind Fiji variety.

Side effects. A numb, tingling mouth is normal and passes within minutes. Taken on a full stomach or in large amounts, kava can cause nausea. Heavier servings bring drowsiness. The first few sessions may feel mild because of reverse tolerance. With heavy long-term daily use some people develop dry, flaky skin, which resolves on stopping. If you notice any of these, reduce the serving or take a break.
