Amanita Muscaria Dosage Guide: Caps, 15:1 Extract and Muscimol by the Milligram

Most user reports put a first dried cap dose at 0.5 to 1 gram, a moderate dose at 2 to 5 grams, and anything past that firmly in experienced territory. Extracts and isolate are measured in milligrams of muscimol instead of grams of mushroom, which is why the numbers look so different.

That is the short answer. The longer one matters because amanita muscaria is one of the least consistent botanicals out there. Two caps from the same forest can hold very different amounts of muscimol and ibotenic acid. So every number below is a range reported by users, not a prescription, and the rule that never changes is start low.

Why amanita dosing is different from other mushrooms

Amanita muscaria does not contain psilocybin. Its main compounds are ibotenic acid and muscimol, which work on GABA rather than serotonin. If you want the pharmacology, our post on muscimol and neuroplasticity covers it in more depth.

Potency depends on where the mushroom grew, when it was picked, how it was dried, and how much ibotenic acid converted to muscimol during drying or decarboxylation. Erowid's long-running dose page notes that season and region shift potency a lot and suggests testing an unfamiliar batch with a single small cap first. Because of that variance, we run HPLC testing on every batch of dried closed caps we sell, so the muscimol and ibotenic acid content on the label reflects that specific lot, not a species average.

Dried caps: the ranges users report

These are the ranges that come up again and again in community reports and on our own customer emails. Treat them as a map, not a rule.

Starter: 0.5 to 1 gram of dried cap. Many people feel very little the first time. That is the point.
Light: 1 to 2 grams. Users describe a relaxed, slightly dreamy feeling and some body heaviness.
Moderate: 2 to 5 grams. This is where most regulars settle for an evening. Effects are noticeably stronger and sleep afterward is often reported as heavy.
Strong: 5 grams and up. Only reported by experienced users, and nausea becomes far more common here.

Erowid's older table runs higher than this (they list 5 to 10 grams as common), but that table was built around wild-picked, often unconverted material of unknown potency. Properly dried and decarbed caps from a tested batch tend to land people lower on the gram scale, which is one more reason to start small with anything new.

One gram of a well-dried cap is a lot less than it sounds. If you are working with whole closed caps, weigh them on a scale that reads to 0.1 gram rather than eyeballing by cap count. A single large cap can be 3 grams or more.

15:1 extract: thinking in milligrams of muscimol

An extract changes the math. Our 15:1 high muscimol extract means roughly 15 grams of raw mushroom went into each gram of finished powder, and the muscimol content is measured per batch, so you can dose by the milligram instead of the gram.

User reports for extract and isolate tend to cluster around these muscimol amounts:

Microdose range: roughly 1 to 3 mg muscimol equivalent.
Light evening dose: roughly 5 to 10 mg.
Moderate: roughly 10 to 15 mg. Most experienced users do not report going past this.

To convert, check the mg of muscimol per gram on the COA for your batch, then divide. If a batch reads 60 mg per gram, a 100 mg scoop of extract is about 6 mg muscimol. If the next batch reads 45 mg per gram, the same scoop is 4.5 mg. That is the batch variance problem in one sentence, and it is why the label on each lot matters more than any chart online.

Muscimol isolate removes the guesswork further because there is no ibotenic acid to account for, but it also removes the margin for error. Milligram scales only.

Ibotenic acid and why fully decarbed matters

Ibotenic acid is the compound most users blame for nausea, sweating and the wired, uncomfortable side of a raw amanita experience. Heat and time convert it to muscimol. Caps that were only air dried can still carry a lot of ibotenic acid, so 2 grams of one batch can feel nothing like 2 grams of another. When you compare notes with someone online, ask whether their material was decarbed before you compare gram counts. Everything in our amanita collection lists both compounds on the batch test.

Timing, food and the start low rule

Onset is slow. Users commonly report 45 to 90 minutes before anything is felt, and Erowid lists 30 to 120 minutes. The classic mistake is redosing at the 40 minute mark because "nothing is happening," then having both doses land at once. Wait at least two hours before deciding a dose was too small.

An empty stomach speeds onset and tends to increase nausea. Many people take caps or extract as a tea or with a light snack. Most evening users report effects tapering after 4 to 6 hours with a heavy sleep behind it.

Do not combine amanita with alcohol, benzodiazepines or other sedatives. Muscimol is a GABA-A agonist and stacking depressants is where the serious reports come from.

A simple first-week approach reported by users

Day one, 0.5 gram of dried cap or the equivalent of about 2 mg muscimol from extract, in the evening, no plans. Day three, if that felt like nothing, move to 1 gram or 4 mg. Hold there for a few sessions before going higher. People who follow something like this almost never end up in the nausea stories, and it lets you learn what your body does with this specific batch of dried amanita caps before you commit to a bigger night.

How much muscimol is in one gram of dried amanita?
It varies wildly, which is the whole problem. Published ranges run from under 1 mg to several mg per gram depending on the mushroom and how it was processed. The only reliable number is the HPLC result for the batch in your hand, which is why we test every lot of extract and caps.

Is a 15:1 extract 15 times stronger than caps?
Roughly, by weight, but not exactly. Extraction pulls compounds unevenly and the decarb step changes the muscimol to ibotenic acid ratio. Dose extract by the mg of muscimol on its COA, not by multiplying a cap dose.
