The herb. Muscimol comes from fly agaric, Amanita muscaria, the red-capped, white-spotted mushroom that grows with birch, pine and spruce across the northern forests of Europe, Siberia and North America, and that the Koryak of Kamchatka and the Sámi of Lapland dried and used in folk practice for centuries. The fresh mushroom holds mostly ibotenic acid; muscimol forms from it through decarboxylation, the loss of a carboxyl group during proper drying and processing. Those traditions had no way to separate the two, so every preparation was a mixture. An isolate is what you get when modern chemistry finishes that conversion and then removes everything else.

Active content. Muscimol belongs to the isoxazole class of compounds and is the mushroom's principal converted compound. This isolate is standardized to a consistent, purified concentration of muscimol, is lab tested for quality, and contains no ibotenic acid; we do not publish a numerical purity on the label, so do not assume one:

• Muscimol: the compound associated in the ethnomycology literature with the calm, heavy, dreamlike, body-focused character of properly prepared Amanita
• Ibotenic acid: the sharper precursor that accounts for much of the restlessness and nausea in raw or under-processed mushroom, absent here

Removing it is what makes an isolate the most predictable reference material in the Amanita range.

Never work with fresh or unprepared caps, and never regard an isolate as interchangeable with mushroom powder by weight.

Regular use. No range is stated. Because such small quantities are involved, a milligram scale is essential, the container should be kept sealed against moisture, and each portion should be recorded. Consistency is the entire reason to use an isolate, so let the record, not the eye, guide the work.

What to expect. Researchers choose the muscimol isolate over caps or extracts when they need one compound, the same every time, without the variability of whole mushroom or the ibotenic acid that comes with it.
