Day Kava vs Night Kava: Heady and Heavy Chemotypes Explained

Kava drinkers sort cultivars into two buckets: heady and heavy. Heady kava is the one you drink at 2pm and still get work done. Heavy kava is the one you drink at 9pm and do not get off the couch. Same plant, same island, different chemistry. Here is what drives the difference and how to pick.

The six kavalactones

Kava root has six main kavalactones that matter. Each cultivar makes them in a different ratio, and that ratio is called the chemotype. It gets written as a six-digit code where each digit is one kavalactone, listed from most abundant to least.

The digits stand for: 1 desmethoxyyangonin, 2 dihydrokavain, 3 yangonin, 4 kavain, 5 dihydromethysticin, 6 methysticin.

So a chemotype of 426531 means kavain is the top compound, then dihydrokavain, then methysticin, and so on. A chemotype of 256431 means dihydrokavain leads, followed by dihydromethysticin. Once you can read the first two digits you can predict how a kava is going to feel before you drink it.

Heady: kavain first

Heady kavas have kavain (4) in the first or second position. Kavain comes on fast, usually inside 10 to 20 minutes, and it is the compound behind the clear-headed, talkative, mood-lifting feel. It is also relatively short, tapering off around the 2 hour mark.

These are the day kavas. Good for a bar session with friends, a work afternoon, or a pre-dinner shell. You feel relaxed but not slowed down. Chemotypes starting with 42 or 46 are the classic heady profile.

Heavy: dihydrokavain and dihydromethysticin first

Heavy kavas lead with dihydrokavain (2) and dihydromethysticin (5). These two come on slower, closer to 30 minutes, and they are more physical. Muscles let go, the body feels weighted, and sleep comes easy afterward. The effect also lasts longer, often pushing the full 4 hours.

These are the night kavas. Chemotypes starting with 25 or 52 are the heavy end of the scale. A big heavy shell is not something to drink before driving or before a meeting.

The Borogoru instant is a single cultivar heavy kava, one of the heaviest noble varieties Vanuatu grows. It is a bedtime kava. Start at 1 to 2 g the first time.

Balanced: the middle

A lot of popular noble cultivars sit in the middle. They open heady for the first hour and then settle into a body feel. Melo Melo and Borogoru fall around here, with Borogoru leaning heavy. Our 6.62% instant is a balanced body blend that works for evenings without knocking you flat.

Percentage and chemotype are separate things

People mix these up constantly. Kavalactone percentage tells you how much total kavalactone is in a gram. Chemotype tells you which ones. A 6% heavy kava can feel far more sedating than an 11% heady kava at the same dose, because dihydrokavain and dihydromethysticin hit the body harder than kavain does. Read both numbers, not just the big one.
