How to Mix Instant Kava So It Actually Tastes Good

Kava tastes like dirt and pepper. There is no fixing that completely, but there is a big gap between a shell that makes you wince and one you can drink without thinking about it. Here is how to make instant kava at home the way we do it behind the bar.

Rule one: cold water only

Never use hot water. Heat breaks down kavalactones and makes the flavor harsher. Cold or room temperature liquid is the whole game. Straight from the fridge is best, and a couple of ice cubes in the shaker help.

Rule two: the shaker method

Instant kava dissolves fine when stirred, but it clumps if you dump powder into a glass and then pour liquid over it. Do it this way instead:

1. Put 6 to 8 oz of cold liquid in a shaker bottle or a jar with a lid.
2. Add your dose. Start at 1 to 2 g if you are new, 3 to 5 g if you are a regular.
3. Cap it and shake for 10 to 15 seconds.
4. Drink it in one or two goes. Sipping kava over 20 minutes just means you taste it for 20 minutes.

Liquid first, powder second, shake hard. That is the fix for 90% of clumping complaints.

Rule three: less liquid, not more

Diluting kava into a 20 oz drink does not make it taste better, it makes it taste bad for longer. Keep the volume small, 4 to 8 oz, so it is a shot you finish in under a minute. Then chase it with something you actually want to drink.

Five mixers that work

1. Coconut water. The house favorite. The natural sweetness and slight fat content take the edge off the pepper. 6 oz coconut water, 3 g instant, shake. Most people who say they hate kava change their mind on this one.

2. Whole milk or oat milk. Fat carries kavalactones and rounds out the flavor. Chocolate milk works too if you want to fully hide it. Around 6 oz, shaken cold. This is a good night shell with a heavy kava.

3. Pineapple or mango juice. Strong tropical fruit covers earthiness better than citrus does. Cut it half and half with water so you are not drinking 30 g of sugar. 4 oz juice, 4 oz water, 3 g instant.

4. Cold brew coffee. Sounds strange, works well with a heady daytime kava. Coffee is already bitter and earthy so the kava disappears into it. 6 oz cold brew, 2 g of a heady instant like the heady daytime variety, a splash of milk. Keep the coffee dose moderate since caffeine pushes against the relaxation.

5. Lemonade or limeade. Sharp acidity plus sugar. This one hides kava the least of the five, but a lot of people like the contrast. Works well with ice.

What does not work

Hot tea, hot coffee, and hot cocoa are out for the heat reason. Carbonated drinks foam up in the shaker and go flat. Alcohol should never be mixed with kava at all, that is a liver load you do not want. Plain water is fine if you want to just get it down, but expect the full flavor.

A note on dose and strength

Your mixer does not change your dose. 2 g of our 6.62% instant is about 130 mg of kavalactones whether it is in coconut water or milk. If you are using a higher percentage like the 11.4%, 2 g is about 230 mg, so start lower. If you are working out your dose, the dosage guide walks through it.

Timing

Drink on an empty stomach or 2 to 3 hours after a meal. Food slows absorption and mutes the effect. Expect onset in 10 to 30 minutes and a session that lasts 2 to 4 hours. A small snack after the first shell is fine and helps some people with stomach comfort.

If you want to test a few of these mixers before committing, every instant kava we carry comes in a 7 g trial size from $11.81, which is 2 to 3 shells at a starting dose. All noble Vanuatu, all HPLC tested.

Not medical advice. If you take medication, ask your doctor before drinking kava. Do not mix kava with alcohol.
