How to Decarboxylate Amanita Muscaria at Home (Time, Temp, pH)
Decarboxylating amanita muscaria means using heat, time and acidity to convert ibotenic acid into muscimol. The reliable home method is a gentle simmer at 80 to 90 C for two to three hours in water brought to a pH of about 2.5 to 3 with lemon juice or citric acid. Here is why that works and how to do it three different ways.
What decarboxylation actually does
Fresh amanita muscaria contains mostly ibotenic acid. Ibotenic acid is a glutamate-like compound and it is the reason raw fly agaric makes people sweat, feel sick and twitch. Muscimol is what ibotenic acid turns into when it loses a carboxyl group. Muscimol is a GABA-like compound, and it is responsible for the calm, dreamy, sedating quality that traditional users describe.
Drying alone converts some ibotenic acid. The closed caps we sell are dried low and slow, but they are not fully decarbed until you finish the job. Sun drying and low oven drying push it further. But to get most of the way there, you need real heat over real time, and acid helps a lot. That is the difference between a cap that was just dried and a fully decarbed amanita.
The three variables: time, temp, pH
Temperature. The conversion needs heat but muscimol itself breaks down if you push too hard for too long. The sweet spot most people land on is 80 to 90 C, just under a simmer. A rolling boil at 100 C will still work but you lose more muscimol along the way.
Time. At 80 to 90 C in acidic water, two to three hours gets you most of the conversion. Some people go longer. Past about four hours you hit diminishing returns and start degrading what you made.
pH. This is the one people skip. Ibotenic acid decarboxylates much faster in acidic conditions. Bring the water down to a pH of 2.5 to 3 with lemon juice, vinegar or citric acid and the reaction speeds up noticeably. Acid also stabilizes muscimol. Neutral water works but takes longer and leaves more ibotenic acid behind.
Method 1: acidic simmer (most reliable)
This is the classic and it is what we recommend for anyone starting out.
- Weigh your dried closed caps and break them into pieces.
- Add about 1 cup of water per 5 g of cap.
- Add a tablespoon of lemon juice per cup, or a quarter teaspoon of citric acid. Check with a pH strip if you have one.
- Bring to a bare simmer, cover, and hold at 80 to 90 C for two to three hours. Top up water as needed.
- Strain. The liquid is your decarbed tea.

Method 2: oven decarb (dry caps)
If you want dry caps you can grind into powder or cap into pills, oven decarb is the move. Spread dried caps on a baking sheet and hold them at about 80 to 90 C for two to three hours. Most home ovens do not go that low, so use the lowest setting with the door cracked and a thermometer on the rack.
The same oven process works for pantherina caps. The catch is that dry heat without acid converts less than the simmer method. You will still improve the caps, and a lot of people are happy with the result, but a simmer with acid does a more complete job. Some people combine the two: oven decarb first, then simmer.
Method 3: low-temp acid soak, long hold
This one is for people with a sous vide or a temperature-controlled crock pot. Vacuum seal or jar the caps in acidic water and hold at 85 C for 3 to 4 hours. The controlled temperature means no boil-off and no risk of scorching. It is the most repeatable method if you have the gear.
How do you know it worked?
Without a lab, you go by feel, and our preparation methods post lists what a good prep should feel like. A well-decarbed prep feels calm and heavy rather than jittery and sweaty. If you still get nausea and restlessness, you probably left ibotenic acid on the table. Go longer or add more acid next time.
With a lab, you get a COA showing muscimol and ibotenic acid in milligrams per gram. That is how we verify our 15:1 high-muscimol extract and it is why a tested extract or a muscimol isolate skips the whole question. The decarb has already been done and measured.
Common mistakes
- Boiling hard for hours. You convert ibotenic acid but destroy a chunk of the muscimol.
- Skipping the acid. Slower conversion, rougher result.
- Using a microwave or coffee maker. Not enough time at temperature.
- Decarbing fresh caps. Dry them first. Wet caps have water weight that throws off your dosing and they extract unevenly.
- Going by cap count instead of grams. Caps vary wildly in size. A scale is not optional.
Dosing after decarb
Decarbed material feels stronger per gram than raw because more of the active is in the useful form. Traditional dried cap ranges on Erowid run 1 to 5 g for light and 5 to 10 g for common, but treat those as a ceiling for decarbed product, not a target. Start at 1 to 2 g equivalent and wait two hours.

Quick FAQ
Can I decarb amanita in the oven at 300 F like cannabis?
No. 300 F is about 150 C, well above where muscimol starts breaking down. Amanita wants low and slow, not the higher temps used for THC.
Does drying at room temperature decarb the caps?
Partially. Air drying converts some ibotenic acid over weeks, and sun or dehydrator drying converts a bit more. It is not a substitute for heat and acid, which is why dried-only caps still need a proper decarb step.
