Instant vs Micronized vs Medium Grind Kava: Which One Fits You

People ask us about instant kava vs micronized more than almost anything else in the shop. The short answer is that all three forms come from the same plant. The difference is how much processing was done before it reached you, and that changes the dose, the prep time, and the price per session.

Medium grind: the traditional route

Medium grind is dried kava root ground to a coarse powder. To use it you knead it in a strainer bag in warm or room temperature water for 10 to 15 minutes, squeeze it out, and drink the liquid. The fibers stay in the bag.

A normal session is 25 to 30 g of root per person. That is a lot of powder, but you are throwing most of the weight away as fiber. It is the cheapest per gram and the most work per shell. If you like the ritual and have the time, medium grind is a good way to drink kava.

Micronized: no straining, some sediment

Micronized kava is root milled fine enough that you stir it straight into water and drink it. No bag, no kneading. The trade-off is that you are drinking the plant material too, so there is a gritty layer at the bottom of the cup and some people get an upset stomach from the fiber.

Typical dose is 7 to 12 g per session. Prep is about 30 seconds. It sits in the middle on price.

Instant: the extracted, dried drink

Instant kava is made differently. Fresh or dried root is prepared as a full-strength drink, strained, then dehydrated back into a powder. What you get is dried kava beverage, not ground root. Roughly 3 g of root goes into every 1 g of instant, which is why it is the most concentrated form and the most expensive per gram. We covered the pricing side in why instant kava costs what it does.

Because the fiber is already gone, you use 1 to 2 g to start and most regulars land at 3 to 5 g per session. It dissolves in cold water in a few seconds and there is nothing to strain.

Dose equivalence table

Form Typical session dose Prep time Straining Stomach load
Medium grind 25 to 30 g 10 to 15 min Yes, strainer bag Low
Micronized 7 to 12 g Under 1 min No Highest (drinking fiber)
Instant 1 to 2 g start, 3 to 5 g regular Under 1 min No Low

So 2 g of instant is doing the job that 8 to 10 g of micronized or 25 g of medium grind would do. When you compare prices, compare per session, not per gram.

What about strength?

With instant, strength is on the label as a kavalactone percentage. 2 g of a 6.62% instant gives you around 130 mg of kavalactones. 2 g of an 11.4% instant gives you around 230 mg. Micronized and medium grind are usually not labeled that way, so you are guessing more. Our 6.62% instant is the one we hand new people first. The 11.4% high potency instant is for people who already know their dose.

Which one fits you

Pick medium grind if you enjoy the process, drink with friends, and want the lowest cost per shell.

Pick micronized if you want something quick and your stomach handles fiber fine.

Pick instant if you want it fast, clean, portable, and measurable. It is the form we drink most at the shop because we can make a shell at a desk with a bottle of cold water and nothing else.

All the instant kava we carry is noble Vanuatu root, HPLC tested, and every one comes in a 7 g trial size starting at $11.81 so you can test a few sessions before committing to a bag. If you want help setting your first dose, read the instant kava dosage guide.

Kava is not medical advice from us. Talk to your doctor if you take medication, and do not mix kava with alcohol.
