Instant Kava Dosage: How Many Grams Per Shell

Instant kava dosage trips up almost everyone the first time. The packet says one teaspoon, you drink it, and nothing happens. Then you read a forum thread where someone is drinking a tablespoon every twenty minutes and wonder what you're doing wrong.

Here's the plain version.

Start here: 1 to 2 grams

For your first shell, mix 1 to 2 grams of instant kava into 4 to 6 oz of cold water or juice. That's about half a teaspoon to a level teaspoon. Shake it, drink it in one or two gulps, and wait 20 to 30 minutes.

If you feel a numb tongue and your shoulders drop a bit, it's working. If you feel nothing, have a second shell the same size. Most regular drinkers land at 3 to 5 grams over a session, not in one gulp.

Why the percentage matters more than the grams

Two instant kavas at the same gram dose can hit very differently. The number that tells you why is the kavalactone percentage.

• 2 grams of a 6.62% instant = about 130 mg of kavalactones
• 2 grams of an 11.4% instant = about 230 mg of kavalactones

So a 2 gram shell of our High Potency 11.4% is closer to a 3.5 gram shell of the 6.62% Body. If a vendor doesn't print the percentage, you're guessing.

A rough ladder

• First timer: 1 to 2 grams, one or two shells, on a light stomach
• Regular: 2 to 3 grams per shell, two or three shells, 20 to 30 minutes apart
• Heavy night: 3 to 5 grams total of a body-heavy kava like Borogoru, spread over an hour

Things that make it feel weak

• Hot water. Heat breaks down kavalactones. Cold water or juice only.
• Full stomach. Eat light, or wait two hours after a meal.
• Reverse tolerance. Kava often feels like nothing the first few sessions. Give it a week of consistent use before you judge it.
• Underdosing. A flat teaspoon is not a heaping teaspoon. Weigh it once so you know what a gram looks like.
