Why Is Instant Kava So Expensive? Cost Per Serving Explained

Pick up a 50 gram bag of instant kava and a 1 pound bag of medium grind and the price tags look ridiculous side by side. The instant bag is a fraction of the size and often costs the same or more. People ask about this on r/Kava constantly. Here's what's actually going on.

Instant kava is kava that's already been brewed

Medium grind is dried root, ground up. You do the brewing at home by kneading it in water through a strainer bag for ten or fifteen minutes.

Instant kava is that finished drink, made at the source with fresh root, then dehydrated back down to a powder. The fiber is gone. What's left is the stuff you actually wanted, the kavalactones, plus a little starch.

It takes roughly 3 grams of root to make 1 gram of true instant. That alone triples the raw material cost before anyone touches the dehydrator.

Compare servings, not bags

A medium grind session uses 25 to 30 grams of root. An instant session uses 2 to 4 grams. So a 50 gram bag of instant is 12 to 25 sessions, while 50 grams of medium grind is about two.

Run that math and the gap narrows a lot. Instant still costs more per session, but you're paying for the brewing, the straining, the time, and the fact that there's no bag to rinse out afterward.

The percentage is the price signal

Two instant kavas at the same price aren't the same deal if one is 6% kavalactones and the other is 11%. The 11% bag gives you nearly twice the active content per gram. That's why we print the percentage on ours and why you should skip any vendor that won't tell you.
