The herb. Kanna, Sceletium tortuosum, is a low succulent native to the Karoo of South Africa. Its lead alkaloid is mesembrine, which gives this material its bright, quick character.

Active content. 4% total alkaloids, high mesembrine. For raw leaf that is unusually high, so the label carries a high-potency warning and the serving is a fraction of a gram.

Dosage and use. Start with ¼ gram; this is not a beginner's leaf. The working serving is ¼ to ½ gram per use, about ¼ tsp, and do not exceed ½ gram. Pack a small pinch in the lip and chew for effects within minutes; brewed, the onset is slower. Do not swap it into an old tea-cut recipe.

What to expect. A quick, bright, sociable lift with sharpened focus and an easy calm behind it, not a mellow evening leaf. For a softer raw kanna, see the Fermented Kanna Loose Leaf Tea Cut, and for the calmer, body-focused side, our Potent and High Mesembrenone Kanna Leaf.

Side effects. Dose is everything with a leaf this potent. Too much can bring nausea, a headache, jitteriness or loss of appetite, all dose-related; reduce next time and drink water.
