The plants. Kanna, Sceletium tortuosum, is a succulent native to southern Africa that contains the alkaloids mesembrine, mesembrenone and mesembrenol. Blue lotus, Nymphaea caerulea, is a water lily native to the Nile Valley and East Africa that contains aporphine and nuciferine. Kava, Piper methysticum, is a Pacific Islander crop plant standardized for its six major kavalactones: kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin. Amanita muscaria is a mushroom found across the northern hemisphere and contains muscimol, ibotenic acid and muscarine. We also carry supporting botanicals and mushrooms including ashwagandha, rhodiola, lion's mane, reishi, maca, cordyceps and ginseng.
How to choose.
Dosing overview. Every extract has its own serving printed on its page and there is no universal number. As a rule, the more concentrated the ratio, the smaller the serving: a 100:1 powder is measured in tiny weighed amounts, a 10:1 in larger ones, and capsules are pre-measured. Start with the lowest listed serving, take it on its own, and wait an hour or more, longer for amanita, before deciding on more.
What to expect. Ethnobotanical extracts are noticeable within the hour: kanna described as lifted, kava as relaxed and tingly, blue lotus as dreamy, amanita as heavy and slow. Mushroom and adaptogen extracts are used daily for weeks and judged over time rather than in the moment. Expect strong, bitter or earthy flavors from anything unflavored.
Side effects and cautions. Too much of any concentrate brings nausea, headache or drowsiness, so reduce.
- Kanna is incompatible with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, triptans, tramadol and St. John's Wort
- Kava should not be combined with alcohol or sedative medications and needs professional advice with any liver condition
- Amanita must never be combined with alcohol, sedatives or medications
- Reishi and cordyceps call for a professional's advice if you take blood-thinning medication or face surgery, and mushroom allergy is possible
- Not for use if pregnant or nursing; the ethnobotanicals are for adults 21 and over
