Kanna Extract Resin

Kanna Extract Resin is kanna in its most concentrated solid form: a dual extract of Sceletium tortuosum reduced to a dark, sticky resin, sometimes listed as channa budder, with no mannitol substrate or carrier of any kind. Because it is a crude extract rather than a powder standardized onto a filler, what you hold is the plant's own concentrated resin, which you can portion for sublingual use, dissolve into hot tea or add to a smoking blend. It is one of the strongest products we make per gram, best suited to people who already know their response to kanna. The kanna is sourced through benefit-sharing partnerships with the South African San Council, the traditional custodians of Sceletium knowledge. Sizes run from .5 gram up to 10 grams, with every whole gram in between.

The herb. Sceletium tortuosum is a small succulent of the Aizoaceae family, native to the semi-desert Karoo of South Africa. The San and Khoikhoi have gathered and prepared it for generations, most often by crushing and fermenting the plant for days before drying it, and the name kanna comes from their word for the eland antelope. The plant carries mesembrine, mesembrenone, delta-7-mesembrenone and mesembranol, and different curing and extraction methods shift the proportions among them. A dual extract like this resin, which uses more than one solvent stage, captures the broadest slice of that profile.

Active content. The label for this resin does not carry a standardized alkaloid percentage, so think of it as a full-spectrum concentrate rather than a numbered extract. All four principal alkaloids are present.

• Mesembrine: the brighter, more uplifting side of kanna
• Mesembrenone and delta-7-mesembrenone: the calmer, warmer, body-focused side
• Mesembranol: rounds out the whole

A small piece carries much more than an equal weight of a mannitol-based powder.

Dosage, first time. Start with a serving of 25 mg, a very small piece, and do not exceed 50 mg per use. Taken sublingually, tuck the piece under the tongue or against the gum and let it dissolve; it is bitter, so have water ready. Dissolved into hot tea the onset is slower and gentler. Whichever route you choose, wait a full hour before taking more.

Regular use. Regular users generally stay within the 25 mg to 50 mg per-use range and let the hour between servings do the work. Our listing also cites a broader .1 to .3 range with an hour's wait before taking more; that figure is well above the per-use servings and belongs only to experienced users who know exactly how this resin lands for them. The same weight, route and time of day will give you a repeatable result. Take breaks between days of use to keep your response steady.

What to expect. Users describe the resin as the fullest expression of kanna: a lifted, clear opening from the mesembrine followed by a warm, easygoing body calm from the mesembrenone fraction, with the balance depending on route. It suits an evening with friends or a slow afternoon. It is not a beginner product and not a precise one; if you want measured potency in a powder, see our 15% Active Alkaloid Kanna Extract Powder, and if you want a balanced powder that is easier to portion, see the Full Spectrum Kanna Extract (Mix).

Side effects. Concentrates punish overshooting more than leaf does. Too large a piece can bring nausea that arrives in a wave, a headache, a wired or jittery restlessness, and a flat appetite for the rest of the day. These are dose effects and fade as the kanna clears. If you feel them, do not take more; wait it out and cut your next serving in half. Stop use if discomfort continues.

Interactions and cautions.

• Never combine kanna resin with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or any other serotonergic medication, a group that includes triptans, tramadol and St. John's Wort, because of the risk of serotonin syndrome
• Do not use with alcohol
• Not for anyone pregnant or nursing, and not for anyone with a heart condition
• For adults 21 and over only; keep well away from children and pets

Ingredients and storage. Kanna extract resin (Sceletium tortuosum), dual extract, no mannitol or other carrier. Keep it in its sealed container in a cool, dark, dry place; warmth makes the resin tacky and harder to weigh.
