How to Make Your Own Vape Liquid and Fill a 510 Cart

Every screw-on cart and refill liquid we sell is the same three things: vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and a botanical extract, with an essence for flavor. No mystery. If you have bought a gallon of our refill juice, or you want to build your own liquid from an extract you already have, this is the method and the ratios we use.

The two carriers

Vegetable glycerin (VG) is thick, slightly sweet, and produces dense vapor. Propylene glycol (PG) is thin, carries flavor well, and wicks fast. Almost every vape liquid is a blend of the two, and the blend decides how the cart behaves. Both are in the DIY Supplies section, USP food grade.

• 50/50 VG to PG: the safe starting point. Wicks in any cart, decent vapor, good flavor carry.
• 70/30 VG to PG: thicker, more vapor, softer on the throat. Needs a ceramic coil cart and a 10 to 15 minute soak before the first draw.
• 30/70 VG to PG: thin and flavor forward. Wicks instantly but can leak from a cart that is not sealed well.

Getting the extract into the liquid

Powder extracts do not dissolve in VG on their own. Warm the PG portion gently in a small glass jar set in hot water, around 120 to 140F, and whisk the extract into the PG first. Once it is dissolved, add the VG and stir until it is one even liquid. Resin extracts soften in warm PG the same way. Let the jar cool, then add your essence a drop at a time. For a 30ml bottle, 3 to 5 drops of a food-grade flavor essence is plenty.

How much extract

We do not publish a milligram figure per cart on our labels, and we would rather you start light than guess high. For a first batch, 1 to 2 percent extract by weight is a sensible range, which is 300 to 600mg of extract in 30ml of liquid. Weigh it on a milligram scale, write the number on the bottle, and adjust the next batch from what the first one taught you.

Filling an empty 510 cart

1. Pull the mouthpiece straight off the empty cart. Most press on, a few unscrew.
2. Draw the liquid into a blunt-tip syringe, or use a 30ml needle-tip squeeze bottle, which is what our refill liquids ship in and is the easier tool.
3. Fill down the inside wall of the glass tank, not into the center post. The center post is the airway. Liquid in there means a gurgling cart and a mouthful of juice.
4. Stop 2 to 3mm below the top. The mouthpiece needs that air gap to seat without pushing liquid up the post.
5. Press the mouthpiece back on and stand the cart upright for 10 to 15 minutes so the coil soaks. Skipping this is how coils burn on the first pull.
6. Screw it onto a 510 battery on the low setting. Thick glycerin blends want low power.

If the cart is not pulling

Either the liquid is too thick for the coil (thin it with a little more PG next time), the coil has not soaked long enough, or the fill went into the airway. Warm the cart in your hand for a minute and take a couple of gentle primer draws without pressing the button.

Storage

Liquid keeps for months in a capped bottle out of light. Carts stand upright with the cap on. Heat thins the liquid and it will seep out of a cart left in a hot car.

Cautions. For adults 21 and over. Never add nicotine, alcohol or anything oil based to a vape liquid. Do not use kanna liquids if you take SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or other serotonergic medication. Not for use if pregnant or nursing.
