Blue lotus flower and tea guide

This is the whole-plant side of our blue lotus range. Blue lotus is Nymphaea caerulea, the sacred water lily of the Nile, and the dried flower is the oldest way to use it: steeped as tea, soaked in wine, or rolled into a blend. We carry the everyday Blue Lotus Flower, the larger and more fragrant Egyptian Hybrid, the scarce True Egyptian line, organic petals and stamens for blends, and flower with stems. Concentrates live under blue lotus extracts, liquids under blue lotus tinctures.

At a glance

  • Whole dried flower, petals and stamens, no sprays or added extracts
  • Three genetic lines: standard, Hybrid Egyptian, True Egyptian
  • For tea, wine infusion, smoking blends and DIY tincture
  • Natural flower only; nothing here is coated or boosted

Standard, Hybrid Egyptian and True Egyptian. Our standard flower is grown in Sri Lanka and Thailand and is the value pick for daily tea. The Egyptian Hybrid carries Egyptian genetics crossed for bigger blooms, deeper color and stronger aroma. True Egyptian is the authentic genetic line, grown in small quantities, and sells on scarcity and provenance rather than strength. We do not grade these by potency; the differences are in flower size, fragrance and lineage.

How to choose.

How to use. Tea: steep 3 to 5 grams of flower in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes, covered, then strain. Wine infusion, the traditional Egyptian method: soak a few whole flowers in a bottle of wine for a day or two. Smoking blends: crumble the petals and mix with a base herb. Keep the flower airtight, dark and dry and it holds color and aroma for a year or more.

What to expect. Blue lotus tea is mild: a gentle, dreamy calm and a relaxed mood, most noticed in the evening. It is subtle by nature. Anyone expecting a strong effect from flower alone should look at the extracts instead.

Cautions.

  • Not for use if pregnant or nursing
  • Avoid combining with alcohol in quantity, sedatives, or medications without asking your provider
  • Adults 21 and over only; keep out of reach of children

Common questions

  • Is blue lotus a real lotus? No, it is a water lily, Nymphaea caerulea. The name stuck from ancient Egypt.
  • Does blue lotus show up on a drug test? Standard panels do not target its alkaloids. Additives in sprayed or synthetic-laced products from other sellers are what cause problems; ours is plain flower.
  • How much flower is in an ounce? Roughly 8 to 12 whole blooms depending on size, or about 8 cups of tea.
