Saffron Extract vs Saffron Threads: What's the Difference?
Saffron threads are the whole dried red stigma of the saffron crocus. Saffron extract concentrates its active compounds, crocin, picrocrocin and safranal, into a measured powder or resin. Threads are for tea and food. Extract is for consistent daily servings, since most clinical trials used about 28 to 30 mg of extract per day.
What are saffron threads?
Each crocus flower gives just 3 threads, picked by hand. Our saffron threads are Super Negin grade, all red with no yellow style, which is the highest grade.
What is saffron extract?
Extract is made by pulling the active compounds out of the threads with a solvent, then drying them. Our saffron extract powder is standardized at 0.3% in a mannitol base so every scoop is even. Our saffron extract resin is a concentrate verified at 17-20%.
Which one has more research?
Most human trials used a standardized extract. A 2020 randomized trial gave healthy adults 28 mg a day of saffron extract for 8 weeks and tracked mood and stress (Lopresti et al., 2020, healthy adults trial (PMC7882499)). A 2013 meta-analysis pooled the earlier trials (Hausenblas et al., 2013, J Integr Med (PMID 24299602)).
