How to Spot a Genuine Jar
The name "mad honey" gets used loosely online, and plenty of regular honey gets sold under it. A few things to check before you trust a jar:
- Color. Real rhododendron honey usually runs darker and redder than grocery store honey. Pale, clear golden honey is a warning sign.
- Taste. It should be bitter with a sharp bite that catches the back of the throat. If it just tastes sweet, it is probably ordinary honey.
- Texture. Raw mad honey is thick, and it can crystallize over time. That is normal for raw honey.
- Jar size and price. Genuine mad honey is scarce and taken in small amounts, so it is usually sold in small jars at a premium. Big cheap tubs are a red flag.
- Seller transparency. A real seller tells you where the honey comes from, gives clear safety warnings and sells to adults only.
Even a genuine jar varies from batch to batch, because grayanotoxin levels depend on how much of the nectar came from rhododendron that season. Start small with any new jar and wait.
You can see our 25g jars in the mad honey collection. See the product page for sourcing details.
