Where did all the high potency kanna leaf go? Around 2010-2015 there was plenty of material and sometime by 2018-2021 the market shifted to high potency kanna extract products which became one of the most popular kanna products. Since then we saw a major uptick in that powder being widely available and loose high potency being out of stock.
The issue from our understanding is that not only was kanna extract becoming one of the most popular methods of consumption with the help of publications such as vice advertising it as snuff.
The high potency leaf in the industry became exclusively reserved for high potency extract because you cannot produce these same high potency extracts as easy without having strong starting material so labs and large players started to buy up in bulk or horde that material for extracts since there was more demand and margins for that material.
Since then it is common to only see field grown kanna or worse illegally poached kanna in the scene. The cheaper material which is known as field grown. It is as it says someone will mass plant a field walk away and come back when it is ready to harvest and or have a license to take set amounts from naturally occurring spots, but be weary of too cheap and with no proof of there licensing because some bad players in the space do illegal over harvesting without no oversight or approval with the risk of eradicating kanna from its natural habitat. So do be careful when purchasing. Field grown kanna usually tests between .2-.5% active alkaloids
Than you have nutraceutical kanna which is kanna grown in green houses usually with clones from genetics the grower likes for potency and ease of growth these plants are regularly watered, maintained and kept healthy and well taken care of but still Nutraceutical typically only average .75 - 1.25% active alkaloids
Then finally there is pharmaceutical grade kanna where it is entirely grown indoors controlling the climate from start to finish with close watch to any fluctuation changes to the microclimate. This type of grow is usually done in large scale warehouses by pharmaceutical or massive drug processing companies typically using hydroponic methods. There methods of growing and climate controls are usually tight kept intellectual property and are not revealed nor talked about on what the strategy is to developing such high potency kanna but there is discussion on a cross between Sceletium Tortuosum and Sceletium Expansum a strain referred to as DV-17. People mention Pharmaceutical kanna testing at 1.5-3% active alkaloids
The kanna landscape has shifted over the years but there has as of lately been a strong interest again in these high potency leaf material making a return to the public consumers. People miss having potent and effective experiences as this interest from the public has been growing and the kanna scene as a whole getting bigger there has been more networks beginning to slowly let go of some of their high potency material.
We hope to see more of this high potency kanna material become available and unique crosses such as the DV-17 become more available to the public
As always love to hear feedback on everyones thoughts on it all and see if we can come together to network to get more access to this high potency material.
