Capsule guide: how to choose, serving and what to expect

Capsules are the no-taste, no-scale way to take an extract, and this collection gathers our vegan capsule formats: kanna in both a bright and a calm profile, kava extract, blue lotus extract, and the supporting botanicals cordyceps, ashwagandha KSM-66 and valerian root in 30 count bottles. Each capsule holds a pre-measured amount of the same small-batch, lab-tested extract sold loose elsewhere on the store, in a plant-based shell. Kanna is sourced through South African San Council benefit-sharing partnerships. For travel, for work and for anyone who dislikes bitter powders, this is the format to start with. If you would rather chew than swallow, the same plants are in our vegan gummies, and empty shells with a filling machine are under DIY supplies.

At a glance

  • Vegan capsule formats: kanna in a bright and a calm profile, kava extract, blue lotus extract, plus cordyceps, ashwagandha KSM-66 and valerian root in 30 count bottles
  • Each capsule holds a pre-measured amount of the same small-batch, lab-tested extract sold loose elsewhere

  • Kanna sourced through South African San Council benefit-sharing partnerships
  • No taste, no scale; good for travel, work and anyone who dislikes bitter powders

The plants. Kanna, Sceletium tortuosum, is offered as a high mesembrine capsule, the brighter alkaloid, and a high mesembrenone capsule, the calmer one. Kava, Piper methysticum, capsules carry kavalactones without the traditional strained drink. Blue lotus, Nymphaea caerulea, capsules carry nuciferine and aporphine. Cordyceps, Cordyceps militaris, is a fungus known for cordycepin; ashwagandha, Withania somnifera, is a nightshade root of Indian herbal tradition, with KSM-66 a standardized root extract; and valerian, Valeriana officinalis, is a European root used in teas for centuries.

How to choose.

Dosing overview. Follow the capsule count on each label and begin with the smallest number listed, taken with water. Capsules must dissolve in the stomach, so the ethnobotanicals take forty-five to ninety minutes to arrive; wait that long before another. The supporting botanicals are taken as a daily routine rather than judged in the moment. Kava capsules are best away from meals, as with any kava.

What to expect. Users describe the Rave kanna capsule as a smooth, lifted, social afternoon and the Melt capsule as melty and easygoing for the evening, both arriving more gradually than a spray. Kava capsules read relaxed and body-focused, blue lotus capsules soft and dreamy. Cordyceps, ashwagandha and valerian capsules are quiet by design and are evaluated over weeks of consistent use. No taste, no bitterness and nothing to prepare.

Side effects and cautions. Taking a second capsule too soon is the usual mistake; mild nausea, headache or drowsiness mean wait longer next time.

  • Kanna capsules are never to be combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, triptans, tramadol or St. John's Wort
  • Kava and blue lotus capsules should not be combined with alcohol or sedative medications, and kava needs professional advice with any liver condition
  • Cordyceps calls for professional advice with blood-thinning medication or before surgery
  • The ethnobotanicals are not for use if pregnant or nursing and are for adults 21 and over
  • With the supporting botanicals, consult a professional if pregnant, nursing or on medication

Common questions

  • Which kanna capsule is for daytime and which for night? Rave is the high mesembrine daytime capsule and Melt is the high mesembrenone evening capsule.
  • Can I open a botanical capsule and take the powder? Yes, though the powder is bitter, and the capsule exists mainly to avoid that.
  • How many capsules are in the 30ct bottles? Thirty, which at one capsule a day is a month of the cordyceps, ashwagandha or valerian.
