Why a cutting rather than seed. Kanna from seed is slow and germination is uneven. A cutting is a clone of an established plant, so it starts with a mature growth habit and skips the whole seedling stage. It is also genetically identical to its parent, which matters if you want a known plant rather than whatever a seed batch gives you. The plant you are growing. Kanna is a low creeping succulent from the Karoo region of South Africa, a semi-desert with hot days, cool nights and very little rain. It makes small fleshy leaves with translucent cells that catch the light, sprawling stems, and white to pale yellow flowers. Grow it like the desert succulent it is and it is easy.

Settling a new cutting in.

• Pot it into a gritty succulent or cactus mix, in a shallow wide pot rather than a deep one, since the habit is creeping
• Water it in once, then leave it. A new cutting rots far more easily than it dries out
• Give it bright but filtered light for the first fortnight while it settles, then move it to full light
• Do not feed it for the first month
• Expect it to look unimpressive for a few weeks before it starts putting on growth

Ongoing care. Water thoroughly, then let the mix dry out completely before watering again. That full dry cycle is what keeps the roots in good order; keeping it damp is the single most common way people lose a kanna plant. Full light suits it, but in very hot conditions give it partial shade so the leaves do not burn. It will not tolerate frost.
