The herb. Wild lettuce (Lactuca virosa) is a tall biennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to Europe, a wild relative of garden lettuce. When cut, the stem bleeds a milky latex that dries into a resin the old pharmacists called lactucarium, used in European herbal practice since the Roman era. The latex carries the bitter sesquiterpene lactones lactucin and lactucopicrin, with flavonoids and coumarins, which give wild lettuce its relaxed, heavy-bodied character.

Active content. This is a whole-herb glycerin extract, not a standardized one; no lactucin percentage is stated and we assign none. Glycerin pulls the flavonoids and a share of the bitter lactones while keeping the extract sweet enough to take by mouth, so it reads as mellow and body-focused rather than sharp and resinous.

Dosage, first time. Shake well before each use. The suggested serving is 3 to 9 full droppers, taken under the tongue or added to a beverage. Start at the lower end, 3 droppers, and wait; it is absorbed within roughly half an hour and builds over the following hour. Adjust gradually across separate evenings.

Regular use. Once you know your response, take your usual serving within the 3 to 9 dropper range as part of an evening or mindful routine, and do not exceed 9 full droppers.

What to expect. Users describe wild lettuce as heavy, mellow and grounding, a wind-down herb for the end of the day rather than anything bright, social or daytime. For the leaf see our Organic Wild Lettuce Loose Leaf Tea; for a concentrated form, the Wild Lettuce Resin.

Side effects. Wild lettuce is dose-related. At the higher end of the range some people notice drowsiness, dizziness, a dry mouth, sweating or nausea. Reduce the serving or stop. People allergic to daisy-family plants such as ragweed may react to wild lettuce.

Interactions and cautions. Do not combine wild lettuce with alcohol, sedative medications or other sedating herbs without guidance from a healthcare professional, and do not drive after taking it. Consult a professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing or taking any medication and review local regulations. For adults only. Keep out of reach of children.

Ingredients and storage. Organic Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa), Vegetable Glycerin. Store tightly capped in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight.
