What B-grade actually means. Grading here is about appearance, not about the material. When a batch comes in, the whole intact caps with even colour are pulled out and sold as A-grade. What is left is the same mushroom, dried the same way at the same time, with more edge breakage, more pieces and less uniform colour. If the specimen is going into a display case, buy A-grade. If it is going under a microscope, into a collection drawer, or into anything where the shape is not the point, B-grade does the same job for less.

The species. Amanita muscaria, the fly agaric, is the red and white mushroom of European folklore and fairy tale illustration. It grows in mycorrhizal partnership with birch, pine and spruce across the northern hemisphere, and its documented record across Siberian cultures makes it one of the most heavily studied subjects in ethnomycology.

Compounds.

• Muscimol: the principal compound in the species
• Ibotenic acid: the precursor, which shifts toward muscimol as material dries and ages
• Muscarine: trace amounts only, despite the shared name

Storage. Dried mushroom is brittle and B-grade material is already partly broken, so a rigid sealed container matters more here than with whole caps. Keep it dark, dry and with a desiccant packet. Light dulls the red over months.

Common questions

• Is B-grade weaker than A-grade? No. Same species, same harvest, same drying. The difference is appearance and breakage.
• What will the pieces look like? Expect a mix of partial caps and fragments with uneven colour rather than whole domes.
• When should I buy A-grade instead? When the specimen is for display, photography or anything where an intact cap is the point.
• Why can you not ship to Louisiana? Louisiana state law restricts this species specifically.
• How should I store it? Rigid sealed container, dark, dry, with a desiccant packet. Broken material is more fragile than whole caps.
