Kanna Seeds (Sceletium Tortuosum) - Grow Your Own Kanna

Product Description: These Sceletium tortuosum (Kanna) seeds are ideal for those who enjoy cultivating unique botanicals. Known for their resilience and ease of care, kanna plants thrive when grown under the right conditions.

Growing Tips:

• Germination: Best started with consistent hydration and gentle bottom warmth, such as a seed mat.

• Watering: Minimal water is required once seedlings establish; avoid overwatering.

• Light: Prefers a lightly shaded area, away from direct harsh sunlight.

Origin and Background: Sceletium tortuosum, commonly called kanna, is native to South Africa, where it has a long history of traditional cultivation. These seeds offer growers the opportunity to connect with a plant that has been valued and cared for over generations.

At a glance

• True Sceletium tortuosum seed
• Germinates with consistent moisture and gentle bottom warmth
• Drought tolerant once established, overwatering is the main risk
• Prefers light shade rather than harsh direct sun
• A succulent, so it wants a gritty, fast-draining mix
• Adults 21 and over

The plant you are growing. Kanna is a low creeping succulent from the Karoo region of South Africa, a semi-desert with hot days, cool nights and very little rain. It makes small fleshy leaves with translucent cells that catch the light, low sprawling stems, and white to pale yellow flowers. Grow it like the desert succulent it is and it is genuinely easy. Grow it like a leafy houseplant and it rots.

Germination, step by step.

• Surface sow on a fine, gritty seed mix. The seed is tiny and needs light, so do not bury it
• Mist rather than pour, and keep the surface consistently damp but never saturated
• Cover loosely to hold humidity for the first week or two
• Give it gentle bottom warmth from a seed mat. This is the single biggest factor
• Be patient. Germination is uneven and can spread over several weeks

Growing on. Once seedlings have their first true leaves, back the water right off. Let the mix dry through between waterings and give it bright but filtered light rather than full afternoon sun, which scorches young leaves. A gritty cactus mix with added perlite or pumice suits it, and a shallow wide pot suits a creeping habit better than a deep one. It will not tolerate frost.

Time to a usable plant. This is a slow grower. From seed you are looking at a long stretch before there is any meaningful leaf to harvest, which is why most people who want plant material sooner start from a cutting instead. Our kanna cutting is a rooted clone of an established plant and skips the whole germination stage.

Storage before sowing. Keep the seed sealed, cool, dark and dry until you are ready. Viability drops with warmth and humidity, so do not leave a packet on a sunny windowsill for a season.

Common questions

• Should I bury the seed? No. Surface sow it. The seed is tiny and needs light to germinate.
• How long does germination take? It is uneven and can run over several weeks. Bottom warmth speeds it up more than anything else.
• What kills kanna seedlings most often? Overwatering. Once they establish, let the mix dry through between waterings.
• Full sun or shade? Light shade. Harsh direct sun scorches young leaves.
• Seeds or a cutting? Seeds if you want to grow it from the start. A cutting if you want an established plant sooner, because kanna from seed is slow.
• What does a kanna seed look like? A kanna seed is tiny, dark and dust-fine, closer to a grain of sand than a garden seed. That is why it is surface sown rather than buried. Expect uneven germination from the same packet, and because wild kanna varies a lot in alkaloid content from plant to plant, each seedling can grow into a slightly different plant. Our guide to growing kanna at home covers seed vs cutting in detail.
