Kava Peach on the Beach

Kava Peach on the Beach is a canned peach seltzer infused with premium South Pacific kava root, made as an alcohol-free alternative for the cooler, the picnic table or the porch. The taste is ripe peach up front with light, fruity botanical notes behind it, carried on a crisp, effervescent base, and the kava is sourced from traditional cultivars rather than an anonymous extract. The idea is vacation-mode calm with no plane ticket and no hangover, in a can that looks at home next to any other seltzer.

The herb. Kava (Piper methysticum) is a pepper-family shrub whose root has been prepared as a drink in Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga for over 3,000 years. It was and is shared in ceremonies, offered to welcome guests and passed around to settle disagreements, which is why early European visitors described it as a drink of peace. The root's kavalactones are what give it character, and their ratio varies by cultivar, producing heady kavas that lift and heavy kavas that ground. Noble cultivars are the everyday drinking varieties chosen by islanders over many generations.

What's in it. The can holds carbonated water, peach and botanical flavor and an infusion of South Pacific kava root; no kavalactone percentage is printed, so none is claimed here. The root's six main kavalactones each play a role:

• Kavain: gives the quick, bright, sociable lift
• Dihydrokavain and dihydromethysticin: bring slower weight to the body
• Methysticin, yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin: round the profile

The natural numbing on the tongue you notice comes from those same compounds and is the simplest proof the kava is real.

Dosage, first time. Serve it ice cold and start with a single can. Have it away from a meal, since a full stomach dulls kava and can make it sit uneasily. Effects are usually felt within 15 to 30 minutes and typically last 2 to 3 hours, though your body and how much you drink will shift that. Let the whole can show itself before opening another.

Regular use. Many Pacific Island communities drink kava regularly, and people who know their response usually keep to one or two cans across an afternoon or evening. Kava has a reverse tolerance, so early cans can feel milder than later ones; go slow at the start, learn how your body responds and keep a balanced routine rather than climbing.

What to expect. Users describe a mellow, grounding calm that keeps the mind clear, which is why this seltzer works for beach days, bonfires, casual get-togethers, a reset after work or the start of a creative session. It does not necessarily make you drowsy, and it is not a heavy evening kava; it is a swap for wine, beer or a cocktail when you want to stay sharp. If you prefer citrus, its sister can Kava Orange Dream is the same idea with organic orange. For a stronger, traditional experience, see our Vanuatu Kava High Potency (Medium Grind).

Side effects. The tingle and mild numbness on the tongue are normal and temporary. A can on a full stomach or too many cans in a row can bring nausea, and larger amounts can make you sleepy; ease off and it passes as the kava clears. Unlike alcohol, kava does not typically cause dehydration or a hangover. Long stretches of heavy daily use can dry the skin, which resolves when you stop.
