Wild Dagga Extract

Our Wild Dagga extract is crafted from Wild Dagga (Leonotis leonurus), also known as Lion's Tail, and extracted using a traditional alcohol-based method. Native to South Africa, Wild Dagga has a long history of use in traditional herbal practice and is valued for its distinctive character.

The plant. Leonotis leonurus is a tall mint-family shrub from the South African grasslands, named Lion's Tail for the bright orange tufts of flower that ring the stem. Dagga is a Khoikhoi word used broadly in South Africa for smoked herbs, which is why the plant carries the name despite being unrelated to cannabis. It has been part of Khoikhoi and Zulu herbal practice for generations.

Why alcohol extraction. Alcohol pulls constituents that water leaves in the plant, and it does it without heat, which is what makes a traditional tincture different from a strong tea. It also keeps indefinitely once made. The trade-off is the bite, which is why most people take it in water rather than straight.

Full spectrum. This is the whole extractable profile of the plant rather than one isolated constituent. Nothing is stripped out and nothing is added back, so it carries the plant's own balance from batch to batch.

Use methods.

• In water or juice: the usual route. A few drops stirred in, which takes the bite off the alcohol.
• Under the tongue: fastest, and strongly bitter. Hold it briefly before swallowing.
• In tea: add it to a hot cup after brewing rather than during, so the heat does not drive the alcohol off.

Start with a small amount and give it proper time before adding more. A concentrate is not the same measure as a cup of flower tea.

Storage. Upright, capped, cool and dark. Alcohol tinctures are stable for years but light degrades the plant constituents, so keep it out of the sun.

Common questions

• Does it contain alcohol? Yes, this is the traditional alcohol-extracted version. The glycerin tincture is the alcohol-free option.
• Is wild dagga related to cannabis? No. Dagga is a South African word for smoked herbs in general. This plant is in the mint family.
• How does a tincture compare to the tea? Far more concentrated, so the measure is drops rather than grams, and alcohol pulls constituents that water leaves behind.
• Can I put it in hot tea? Yes, but add it after brewing so the heat does not drive off the alcohol carrier.
• Where does the plant come from? Leonotis leonurus grown in South Africa.
