Daytime botanicals guide: how to choose and what to expect

This is our shelf of botanicals that suit daylight hours, 71 listings chosen because users describe them as bright, clear-headed, social or energizing rather than heavy. It includes high mesembrine kanna in powder, capsule and spray form, heady kava chemotypes, and traditional herbs such as damiana, wild dagga, ginseng and maca. Every extract here is made in small batches and our standardized lines are lab tested; kanna comes through South African San Council benefit-sharing partnerships, kava from independent Pacific farmers and wild dagga from our own organic farm in South Africa. Its counterpart is the night time shelf. If you are new to kanna, BLOOM MT5 5% is the usual first pick, and our comparison of natural stimulating herbs covers how these plants differ.

At a glance

  • Botanicals that suit daylight hours, 71 listings
  • Chosen because users describe them as bright, clear-headed, social or energizing rather than heavy
  • High mesembrine kanna in powder, capsule and spray form, heady kava chemotypes, damiana, wild dagga, ginseng and maca
  • Every extract made in small batches, standardized lines lab tested
  • Kanna through South African San Council benefit-sharing partnerships, kava from independent Pacific farmers
  • Wild dagga from our own organic farm in South Africa

The plants. The daytime shelf leans on a handful of plants:

  • Kanna, Sceletium tortuosum, is the anchor of the daytime shelf when its extract is standardized toward mesembrine, the brighter of its alkaloids
  • Heady kava, Piper methysticum, is a chemotype where kavain leads the six kavalactones
  • Damiana, Turnera diffusa, is a Mexican and Central American shrub with a long record as a tea herb, high in the flavonoid apigenin
  • Wild dagga, Leonotis leonurus, is the orange-flowered South African mint with leonurine
  • Ginseng, Panax, carries ginsenosides, and maca, Lepidium meyenii, is a Peruvian highland root eaten as food for centuries

How to choose. Match the plant to your daytime routine:

Dosing overview. Each product page carries its own serving and that is the number to use; daytime formats are usually taken once in the morning or early afternoon so they have cleared by evening. Weigh kanna powders on a milligram scale and wait two hours, give sprays half an hour, prepare instant kava away from meals, and take ginseng and maca powders in food or a drink as their pages describe. Start low on the first day.

What to expect. Users describe high mesembrine kanna as lifted, chatty and present, heady kava as uplifted and clear with a tingling mouth, damiana and dagga as a light, easygoing tea, and ginseng and maca as neutral in the moment and judged over weeks. None of these are stimulants in the coffee sense; they are botanicals people take before a walk, a workday or a social afternoon rather than before bed.

Side effects and cautions. Too much kanna brings jitteriness, nausea or headache that fade as it clears; heady kava can still bring nausea on a full stomach; smoked dagga can irritate the throat.

  • Kanna must never be combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, triptans, tramadol or St. John's Wort
  • Kava should not be combined with alcohol or sedative medications
  • Kanna, kava and dagga are not for use if pregnant or nursing and are for adults 21 and over
  • With ginseng, maca and damiana, consult a professional if pregnant, nursing or on medication

Common questions

  • Which kanna is best for daytime use? The high mesembrine products, MZQ powder, Rave capsules and the Rave mouth spray, because mesembrine is the brighter alkaloid.
  • Will daytime kava make me drowsy at work? The heady day time chemotype is chosen for its kavain-forward profile, but do not drive until you know your own response.
  • Can I take a daytime herb and a night time herb on the same day? Many people do, hours apart, but learn each one alone first.
