Akuamma Seed Extract (Resin)
Akuamma (Picralima nitida) is a small evergreen tree native to the tropical forests of West and Central Africa. Its seeds — known locally as osu, mkpokiri, or simply akuamma — have been gathered and used in traditional Ghanaian, Nigerian, and Ivorian herbal practice for generations.
What the resin is. This is a concentrated extract rather than a raw powder. Whole seeds are ground, their soluble constituents are drawn out, and the liquid is reduced until only a dense, dark resin remains. Because most of the inert seed fiber is left behind, the finished resin is considerably more compact by weight than plain ground seed.
Chemistry. Akuamma seeds are best known for an unusual family of indole alkaloids — chiefly akuammine, along with akuammidine, akuammicine, akuammigine, and pseudo-akuammigine. These molecules continue to attract academic interest in natural product chemistry and pharmacognosy, and they're also the reason the seed tastes so intensely bitter.
Appearance and handling. Expect a firm, glossy, dark brown to near-black resin with a sharp herbal aroma. It softens with warmth and firms up again as it cools, so a brief chill makes it much easier to portion. Store it in a sealed, airtight container away from heat, direct light, and humidity.

Akuammine
Akuammine is the star alkaloid inside akuamma seed, harvested from Picralima nitida, a tree that grows wild in the forests of West and Central Africa. It's what gives these little seeds their bold, unmistakably bitter character, and it's the reason chemists have found them so fascinating since the 1950s. Akuammine never works solo either — it arrives surrounded by companion alkaloids like akuammidine and akuammicine, in ratios that shift subtly from tree to tree and harvest to harvest. Chemically it's a cousin of mitragynine, the alkaloid kratom is known for, though the two plants come from completely different corners of the botanical world.
