Akuamma Seed Whole

Akuamma Seed Whole is whole, unground seeds of the Picralima nitida tree, sourced from West Africa. The herb. Akuamma (Picralima nitida) is a tree in the Apocynaceae family growing across Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and the Ivory Coast. Its large fruits hold flat brown seeds that have been dried, ground and used in West African household practice for generations, and in Ghana the seed powder has long been sold in local markets. The seeds are intensely bitter, a trait shared across this plant family.

What's in it. The seeds contain a group of indole alkaloids:

• Akuammine and akuammidine, the chief alkaloids
• Smaller amounts of akuammicine, pseudo-akuammigine and picraline

Akuammine is the dominant one and the reason the seed is studied; the minor alkaloids shift the overall character.

Dosage, first time. The copy gives no serving, so grind a single seed and start with a small pinch of the powder in capsules or stirred into warm water. Onset is usually within an hour. Wait a few hours before considering more, and do not judge the seed by its taste, which is harsh for everyone.

Regular use. People who know their response grind a few seeds at a time and keep the amount steady. Whole seeds are easy to over-grind, so weigh the powder rather than counting scoops.

What to expect. Users describe a mild, body-focused, mellow feel with some heaviness, which is why akuamma is usually kept for the evening rather than the workday. It is not a stimulant and not a social herb. For a pre-ground option, see our Akuamma Seed Extract Powder.

Side effects. The most reported are nausea, stomach upset and drowsiness, all dose-related and worse on an empty stomach. The bitterness alone can turn the stomach. Reduce the amount or take it with food; stop if discomfort continues.

Interactions and cautions. Do not combine with alcohol, sedative medications or opioid pain medications. Do not drive after use until you know your response. Not for use if pregnant or nursing. Consult a professional before use if you take any medication. Adults only.

Ingredients and storage. Whole akuamma seed (Picralima nitida). Store the seeds sealed in a cool, dry, dark place; grind only what you will use within a few days.

Common questions

• How do I grind whole akuamma seeds? A coffee grinder or spice mill handles them, though the seeds are hard, so pulse in short bursts.
• Why buy whole akuamma seed instead of powder? Whole seeds hold their alkaloids longer in storage and let you control the grind.
• Do akuamma seeds taste bad? Yes, they are among the most bitter seeds in herbalism, which is why most people capsule the powder.
