The herb. Kava (Piper methysticum) is the pepper-family root of Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga, shared as an evening drink for over three thousand years, carrying kavalactones. Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a Karoo succulent chewed by the San and Khoikhoi for generations, with mesembrine and mesembrenone as its alkaloids. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is the red bracket fungus of East Asian practice, rich in triterpenes and beta-glucans, and chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is the birch conk of Siberian folk tea, carrying melanin and betulinic acid.

Active content. No kavalactone, alkaloid or mushroom percentages are stated for MAXCHILL, so we quote none. The kava does the heavy, body-focused work, the kanna keeps things lifted and social, the poppy softens the edges, and the mushrooms add earthy depth.

Dosage, first time. Take it on an empty or light stomach, since kava absorbs poorly after a large meal. Start with part of the bottle, wait, and finish once you know how it lands. Do not add a second bottle on a first try.

Regular use. One bottle per session is the sensible ceiling. Kava carries a reverse tolerance, so the first few sessions may feel mild; do not stack bottles to compensate.

Interactions and cautions.

• Do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or other serotonergic medications, including triptans, tramadol and St. John's Wort, because of the serotonin syndrome risk with kanna
• No alcohol, sedatives or benzodiazepine medications with kava
• Consult a professional with any liver condition or liver-metabolized medication
• Reishi may slow blood clotting, so ask your provider if you take blood-thinning medication or face surgery
• Not if pregnant, nursing, or with a heart condition
