Amanita Muscaria vs Amanita Pantherina: Potency, Effects and Which to Choose
Amanita pantherina is generally considered stronger than amanita muscaria per gram, often by a factor of two or more, because it tends to carry more muscimol and ibotenic acid. Muscaria is the better choice for beginners and for traditional tea. Pantherina is for experienced users who want more from less. Here is the full comparison.
Same family, same compounds
Both mushrooms are in the Amanita genus and both contain the same two actives: ibotenic acid and muscimol. Neither contains psilocybin. Neither contains the amatoxins found in the death cap. The chemistry is the same story in both, so everything you know about preparing muscaria applies to pantherina. The differences are in concentration and in the ratio between the two compounds.
How to tell them apart
Muscaria is the classic red cap with white warts. Some varieties run orange or yellow. Pantherina is brown to tan, sometimes almost gray, with the same white warts and a similar white gill and stem structure. The name means "panther," a reference to the spotted brown cap.
Dried, the color difference holds. Muscaria closed caps dry to a deep orange-red. Pantherina caps dry to a brown or beige. If a vendor sells you "pantherina" that looks red, something is off.
Potency per gram
This is the headline difference. Reports from foragers, traditional users and the handful of published analyses consistently put pantherina above muscaria. A common rule of thumb is that pantherina is two to three times stronger by weight, though individual specimens vary enough that you should never treat that as a fixed number.
The reason seems to be higher ibotenic acid and muscimol content in the fruiting body, and possibly a higher proportion of ibotenic acid, which becomes muscimol when you decarb properly. Our guide to fully decarbed amanita explains that conversion.
Practical translation: if 5 g of muscaria gives you a common-strength experience, somewhere around 2 g of pantherina may land in the same range. Start lower than that. Erowid's dose page gives 1 to 5 g of dried muscaria cap as light. Scale that down by half or more for pantherina and you are in the right zone for a first try.
How the effects compare
People who use both describe muscaria as softer and dreamier. It comes on gently, tends toward relaxation and a heavy, floaty body feel, and is more forgiving of small dosing errors.
Pantherina is described as more intense and more physical. The come-up can be faster and the body load heavier. Some users report a more vivid, immersive quality at the peak. The flip side is that the unpleasant side of amanita, the sweating and nausea from ibotenic acid, shows up harder if the prep was sloppy. A proper decarb matters more with pantherina, not less.
Duration is similar for both, typically 5 to 8 hours with a tail into the next morning at higher doses.
Which to choose
Choose muscaria if:
- It is your first time with any amanita.
- You want to make traditional tea and follow the well-documented dose ranges.
- You prefer a gentler curve with more room for error.
- You want the classic red mushroom experience.
Choose pantherina if:
- You have done muscaria several times and know how your body responds.
- You want a smaller amount of material for the same effect.
- You are comfortable weighing to 0.1 g and dosing conservatively.
A good middle path is to keep both muscaria caps and pantherina caps on hand and pick by the evening you want.
Either way, start small, wait two hours, and keep notes. The preparation methods are identical, so once you have your tea process dialed on muscaria, switching is just a matter of using less.
A third option: skip the species question
If what you actually want is a known amount of muscimol, the species stops mattering. A 15:1 high-muscimol extract or a muscimol isolate gives you the compound itself, measured on a COA. That removes cap-to-cap variation and the muscaria-vs-pantherina potency gap in one move. It is the most repeatable way to use amanita, and it is what a lot of long-time users end up settling on.
Safety notes for both
Neither mushroom is deadly in the way the death cap is, but pantherina in particular shows up in poison control reports because people eat it raw or misjudge the dose. Do not eat either species raw. Decarb them. Do not mix with alcohol or sedatives. Do not drive. And do not forage unless you have been trained, because brown amanitas have dangerous lookalikes.
Lab testing solves most of this. Compare the COA on our 15:1 extract to a bag of caps and the potency difference is plain. Every item in our amanita collection has a COA showing muscimol and ibotenic acid content, so you can compare species by the actual numbers instead of by reputation.
Quick FAQ
Is amanita pantherina legal in the US?
Same status as muscaria. Not federally scheduled, banned in Louisiana, no specific law in the other 49 states. See our state-by-state legality guide for the details.
Can I use pantherina and muscaria together?
You can, since they contain the same compounds, but it makes dosing harder. If you do, treat every gram of pantherina as two to three grams of muscaria and add the totals. Simpler to pick one per session.
