Add powder slowly and read once the number stops moving. For very small amounts, weigh several scoops together and divide, since a 0.01 g scale is most trustworthy above about 0.1 g. Store it with the lid closed and take the batteries out if it will sit unused for months.

Common questions

• Does it read to 0.001 g? No. This is a 0.01 g scale, which is 10 milligrams per step. It is fine for portioning extract powders in the 50 mg and up range. For single-digit milligram work you would need a lab balance.
• Do I need this for loose leaf tea? Not strictly, a kitchen scale works for leaf. It earns its place with extract powders, capsule filling and small tincture batches where a kitchen scale cannot see the difference.
