The herb. Horny goat weed is the common name for several Epimedium species, low perennials in the Berberidaceae family native to the mountains of China, Korea and Japan, with heart-shaped leaves and delicate spurred flowers. The leaf has been gathered and brewed in Chinese herbal practice for well over a thousand years under the name yin yang huo, and its English name comes from a shepherd's story about his flock.

What's in it. The active is horny goat weed leaf, whose signature compound is icariin, a prenylated flavonoid, alongside related flavonoids such as epimedin. Users describe the leaf's character as warming and energizing, and in a gummy it reads as a gentle glow that builds rather than a jolt.

Dosage, first time. Eat one chew from a pack, about an hour before you want to feel it, and see how it lands before eating the second. Onset is gradual, usually within thirty to sixty minutes. Each pack holds 2 chews, so a pack is one evening's supply at most.

Regular use. People who know their response use one or two chews for an occasion rather than daily. The 3-pack gives three evenings. Do not exceed one pack in a night.

What to expect. Users describe a warm, energized glow that helps them relax, stay present and enjoy the night. It suits date nights and slow evenings in. It is not a stimulant and not a daily supplement. For the loose leaf, see our Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium Leaf).

Side effects. Epimedium at larger amounts is documented to cause dizziness, dry mouth, thirst, a faster heartbeat and, occasionally, nosebleed. If any appear, stop for the night and use one chew next time. Discontinue if discomfort continues.
