Kava Whole Intact Dry Roots

Kava Whole Intact Dry Roots are whole, unground lateral roots of 100% authentic Fijian kava, harvested from rare 5-year-old Piper methysticum plants and sun dried in Fiji so the root keeps its strength and integrity. Every piece is hand-selected from mature noble cultivars, and lateral roots are chosen deliberately because they are the most concentrated part of the plant for kavalactones.

The herb. Kava, Piper methysticum, is a member of the pepper family native to the Pacific Islands, with Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga at the heart of its cultivation. For more than three thousand years the root has been pounded, kneaded in water and shared at day's end as a ceremonial and social drink. The root carries six major kavalactones, and the ratio between them, the chemotype, is what separates a bright daytime kava from a heavy evening one. Noble varieties are the cultivars islanders have chosen for generations for pleasant daily drinking.

What's in it. Lateral roots hold the plant's richest natural concentration of kavalactones, but this is not a standardized extract and no percentage is claimed; the strength is whatever the root grew over its 5 years in Fijian soil. The six main compounds are kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin:

• Kavain: the heady one, quick and uplifting, felt mostly in mood and outlook
• Dihydrokavain and dihydromethysticin: the heavy end, slower, more body-focused and more likely to leave you melty

Fijian noble roots tend toward a balanced profile.

Dosage, first time. The listing gives no set serving, so start small and let your body tell you. Pasteurize the roots first, then pulverize or crush them and prepare a traditional tea by kneading the ground root in water through a strainer bag and drinking the milky liquid. Take it away from meals, because a full stomach blunts absorption and is the usual reason for a queasy first bowl. Sip a small shell, wait at least half an hour, and notice the numb, tingling mouth that marks real kava.

Regular use. People who know their kava usually settle into a few small shells spread across an evening. Reverse tolerance is real with this plant: the first several sessions can feel mild, and the full effect often arrives only after the body has met kava a few times, so do not chase a stronger response by piling on root in the first week.

What to expect. Users describe a balanced Fijian character: a calm, easygoing warmth that is social enough for conversation and grounding enough for a wind-down. This is the format for people who want the ritual, the strainer bag, the shell and the unhurried pace, or who want to see and hold the plant, since intact roots make a striking display piece for anyone who values kava's cultural legacy. For the same tradition with the grinding already done, our Fiji Kava High Potency (Medium Grind) is the natural next step, and for a no-strain mix see the Micronized Kava Powder.

Side effects. A numb, tingling mouth after the first sips is normal and passes. Nausea is the most common complaint and it almost always traces back to a full stomach or drinking too much too fast; smaller shells, spaced out, solve it. Larger servings bring drowsiness. Long-term daily use in large amounts can produce dry, flaky skin, which clears once you stop or cut back. If anything feels off, reduce the amount or stop.

Interactions and cautions.

• Do not mix kava with alcohol, and do not combine it with sedative or benzodiazepine medications
• If you have any liver condition or take a medication processed by the liver, consult a healthcare professional first
• Take kava away from meals, and do not drive until you know how it affects you
• Not for use if pregnant or nursing
• Adults 21+ only

Ingredients and storage. Whole intact dried lateral roots of noble kava (Piper methysticum), sun dried in Fiji, nothing added. Store sealed in a cool, dry, dark place; whole roots hold their potency far longer than powder because far less surface is exposed to air.

Common questions

• Do Kava Whole Intact Dry Roots need to be pasteurized before drinking? Yes, the listing calls for pasteurizing the raw sun-dried roots first, then crushing or pulverizing them for a traditional tea.
• Why are lateral roots preferred over the stump for whole kava root? Lateral roots carry the plant's most concentrated kavalactone content, which is why they are the prized part for a full-bodied brew.
• How long do whole dried kava roots keep? Stored sealed, cool and dry, intact roots last much longer than powder, so the 8oz, pound or kilo sizes are practical for regular drinkers.
