Kanna guide: how to choose, dosing and safety

Kanna is the plant Healing Herbals is built around, and this is the full catalog of it, 79 listings across standardized extract powders, resins, capsules, gummies, tinctures, mouth and nasal sprays, pre-rolls, drinks, loose leaf, seeds and live cuttings. Our extracts are produced in small batches with a strict focus on purity, species authenticity and alkaloid preservation, and the standardized lines are lab tested for their mesembrine and mesembrenone profile. Raw material is sourced through South African San Council benefit-sharing partnerships. Liquid formats have their own shelf under kanna tinctures and infusions.

The plant. Sceletium tortuosum is a low, creeping succulent in the Aizoaceae family from the Karoo region of South Africa. The San and Khoikhoi chewed and fermented it for generations, naming it after the eland antelope. It carries a small family of alkaloids:

  • Mesembrine, which reads brighter and more uplifting
  • Mesembrenone and delta-7-mesembrenone, which read calmer and more body-focused
  • Mesembranol

Fermentation shifts the ratio, which is why two products at the same percentage can feel different.

How to choose. Start by deciding on character, then on format:

Dosing overview. Each product page lists its own serving; follow it. Weigh powders on a milligram scale, start at the low end, and wait about two hours before deciding on more. Sprays and tinctures come on faster, so give them at least half an hour. Do not stack formats until you know how one lands, and remember the 15%, 20% and 24% powders call for far smaller amounts than a 5% extract.

What to expect. Users describe high mesembrine kanna as lifted, chatty and present, and high mesembrenone kanna as melty, easygoing and body-focused. Tea and powders are felt within an hour, sprays much sooner, and the experience tapers over a few hours. Kanna is a daytime and early evening plant; it is not a knockout format, and it pairs naturally with a walk, a conversation or a creative session.

Side effects and cautions. Effects are dose-related. Too much can bring mild nausea, headache, jitteriness or a dip in appetite, which pass as the alkaloids clear; take less next time.

  • Do not combine kanna with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or other serotonergic medications including triptans, tramadol and St. John's Wort, because of serotonin syndrome risk
  • Skip alcohol
  • Do not use if pregnant, nursing or with a heart condition
  • Every product here is for adults 21 and over

Common questions

  • What is the difference between high mesembrine and high mesembrenone kanna? High mesembrine extracts such as MZQ read brighter and more social, while high mesembrenone extracts read calmer and more physical.
  • Is fermented kanna different from unfermented leaf? Yes, fermentation follows the traditional kougoed method and changes both the alkaloid ratio and the taste, which is noticeably more bitter.
  • Where does Healing Herbals kanna come from? It is grown in South Africa under San Council benefit-sharing partnerships, then extracted in small batches.
